I undertook a higher surgical training programme in the Southwest Thames Deanery, London and pursued a career in minimally invasive, Upper GI and Bariatric surgery. I completed a fellowship in Bariatric surgery at Homerton Hospital in London and also in Belgium.
I have been working as a Consultant Surgeon at Homerton Hospital in the Department of Bariatric, Upper GI and General Surgery. I am trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery and competent to perform laparoscopic procedures such as cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, hernia repair, anti reflux surgery in addtion to obesity surgery such as gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.
I am a member of BOMSS, ASGBI and ALS.
I am passionate about teaching and am on the faculty for a biannual two day Homerton Bariatric Surgery Training Course for aspiring bariatric surgical trainees. I am also on the faculty for an annual two day International Homerton Bariatric Surgery Symposium.
I developed a deep interest in Bariatric Surgery as it is incredibly rewarding to see the benefits and is a life changing experience for the patients. It is gaining more recognition and support from the Department of Health but the situation is still far from ideal.
The key to being a successful bariatric Surgeon is choosing the right team. A multidisciplinary approach involves providing the best care , making the right decisions for the patient and choosing the right operation. The weight loss centre must adhere to the highest standards.
Choosing a surgeon can be a daunting process for a patient but I strongly believe in a comprehensive weight loss programme which would promote education and training to achieve the best long term results.
Having performed more than 300 laproscopic obesity operations, I feel I have the experience, expertise and the results to prove it. Statistics from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) show that only 9% are women and I am proud to be one of the few female bariatric surgeons in the UK. Being a woman, I have inherent qualities such as warmth, dutiful, greater empathy and deeply care for my patients to provide the highest standard of care. I feel privileged to be able to engage with my patient, help with their decisions and be able to make a difference.
