Professor Underwood obtained his first class honours undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford. He then went on to gain his general medical training and specialised in cardiac medicine. His area of special interest for the last 20 years has been non-invasive cardiac imaging.
He has worked at the Royal Brompton Hospital and its academic wing since 1985.
Professor Underwood teaches on the Cardiovascular BSc at Imperial College London and he is the module lead for clinical sciences.
