What to expect from gallbladder removal

  • Why do I need my gallbladder removed?
Your gallbladder is usually removed as the result of having gallstones. They can cause pain and nausea, especially after eating. Surgery to remove your gallbladder is the most common and effective treatment in most cases.
  • What does surgery involve?

Surgery to remove your gallbladder is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will be asleep during the procedure.

Most gallbladder removals are carried out as laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures. Sometimes, your consultant may need to perform open surgery, and this will be discussed with you during your consultation.

A laparoscopic gallbladder removal is less invasive than open surgery and involves your surgeon making several small incisions in your upper abdomen to use special instruments to access and remove your gallbladder.

Open surgery involves making one, larger incision in the upper abdomen to allow the surgeon to access and remove the gallbladder.

  • How much does gallbladder cost?

At KIMS Hospital, we offer a guide price of £5,250 for laparoscopic surgery and £5,200 for open surgery.

The guide price is based on the usual clinical needs of patients having this procedure. The price will only change if your pre-admission assessment identifies any additional clinical needs such as; extra nursing care due to pre-existing conditions or special equipment required.

Following your pre-admission assessment, your final quoted cost is part of our fixed price package that includes the consultant’s fee for performing the procedure, anaesthetic fees, follow-up consultations and all hospital costs including theatre time, nursing care and length of stay.

Once you have made the decision to go ahead with surgery, payment will be taken upfront. Our fixed price guarantee means there are no hidden costs and you can have peace of mind this is taken care of ahead of your surgery so you can concentrate on your treatment and recovery.

Not everyone will have the funds to be able to pay for their surgery upfront. We offer 0% finance options which can help you spread the cost of your surgery over time.

It is important to note that your initial consultation with your surgeon is not included within the package price. Your surgeon will invoice you separately for this.

  • How long do I need to stay in hospital for?
You may be able to go home the same day, but it is possible you will need to stay overnight for observations. If you end up needing open surgery, this may increase to 3-5 days. Your consultant will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.
  • How long is recovery time?

If your gallbladder is removed as a laparoscopic procedure, recovery time is much faster. Most patients are back to doing normal activities within two weeks. Open surgery does take longer to recover from, and it may be six to eight weeks before you are fully recovered.

  • What is life like without a gallbladder?

You can function normally without your gallbladder. After recovery, you should have no adverse effects and be able to go on living life normally. Rarely, some people have issues with bloating and diarrhoea after surgery, but this should improve within a few weeks.
