What to expect from Inguinal Hernia Repair

  • What causes an inguinal hernia?
Hernias can occur at any age, but are mostly associated with getting older. As we age, the muscles and tissue in our abdomen can become weaker. When part of your intestines and fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in this area it can cause a bulge to appear which, is called a hernia.
  • What does surgery involve?

Surgery aims to push the bulge back into place and repair the weakness in the muscle walls. Most inguinal surgery repairs are carried out as laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures.

Sometimes, your consultant may recommend open surgery. Each technique has its own indications. These will be discussed with you during your consultation.

A laparoscopic hernia repair is less invasive than open surgery and involves your surgeon making several small incisions in your abdomen to use special instruments to repair the hernia.

Open surgery involves making one incision to allow the surgeon to repair the hernia without laparoscopic instruments.

  • How much does inguinal hernia surgery cost?

At KIMS Hospital, we offer a guide price of £2,600 for laparoscopic surgery and £2,400 for open surgery.

The guide price is based on the usual clinical needs of patients having this procedure. The price will only change if your pre-admission assessment identifies any additional clinical needs such as; extra nursing care due to pre-existing conditions or special equipment required.

Following your pre-admission assessment, your final quoted cost is part of our fixed price package that includes the consultant’s fee for performing the procedure, anaesthetic fees, follow-up consultations and all hospital costs including theatre time, nursing care and length of stay.

Once you have made the decision to go ahead with surgery, payment will be taken upfront. Our fixed price guarantee means there are no hidden costs and you can have peace of mind this is taken care of ahead of your surgery so you can concentrate on your treatment and recovery.

Not everyone will have the funds to be able to pay for their surgery upfront. We offer 0% finance options which can help you spread the cost of your surgery over time.

It is important to note that your initial consultation with your surgeon is not included within the package price. Your surgeon will invoice you separately for this.

  • How long do I need to stay in hospital for?

You may be able to go home the same day, but it is possible you will need to stay overnight for observations. Your consultant will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.

  • How long is recovery time?

Most patients make a full recovery within six weeks. Many people return to driving and work within two weeks.

Payment to suit you with 0% and fixed rate interest options

Following an appointment with your Consultant, you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your treatment. With interest free finance at Representative 0% APR (fixed) along with longer term fixed rate loans, there is an option for everyone.
