Over time, the muscles and ligaments that support your vagina and womb can become overstretched or weakened, usually after childbirth, after a hysterectomy, the menopause or a result of obesity, which can cause your vagina and womb to drop down and sometimes create a bulging appearance. This is not always painful and may sometimes go unnoticed until identified during a cervical screening.

Your health and confidence matter to us

We work with Consultant Gynaecologists who can repair a vaginal wall prolapse by a colporrhaphy procedure which aims to restore the vaginal vault to strengthen the tissue. Your Consultant will support you through your recovery by providing expert advice around maintaining your pelvic floor muscles.

If you are worried about symptoms relating to your vagina, womb or pelvic organs, book an appointment with a Consultant at KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre. The Gynaecologists we work with are renowned experts and restoring your health and confidence is their priority.

FAQs

What does a colporrhaphy (vaginal repair) involve?

The procedure usually takes less than an hour and can be completed under local or general anaesthetic. Your Gynaecologist will usually repair your vaginal wall through your vagina, using dissolvable stitches to strengthen the tissue. This may be at the front or back wall of the vagina, or the top of the vagina depending on the prolapse. Sometimes the operation is performed through an abdominal incision. Your Consultant may also need to remove some excess vaginal skin.

Where will my surgery take place?

Vaginal prolapse surgery will take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including initial consultations or follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

What is the recovery period?

You may have a catheter fitted to take urine from your bladder into a bag, and a dressing (vaginal pack) to reduce bleeding. Both will usually be removed after a day or two. It usually takes around six weeks to make a full recovery from the surgery.
