What to expect from varicose vein treatment

  • What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and swollen. The veins are usually visible just underneath the skin often looking blue or purple in colour and can appear lumpy, bulging or twisted. Varicose veins are most commonly seen on legs.
  • What causes varicose veins?

A healthy vein allows blood to flow forward smoothly towards the heart. Small valves on the inside of the vein walls prevent blood from flowing backwards. When these valves become faulty or stop working altogether, blood can flow backwards; collecting in the vein and causing it to expand. It is these expanded veins that create varicose veins.

  • What are the main symptoms?

The main symptoms for varicose veins are visual; they will look lumpy or twisted and bulge from underneath the skin. The area of skin immediately over the vein can be dry and itchy too. However, they can also cause an aching, heavy feeling or a burning or throbbing sensation in your legs. They can cause muscle cramps and swollen feet and ankles. Complications of varicose veins, inflammation (phlebitis) and skin problems are relatively uncommon.

  • What treatments are available?

There are a number of treatments available to help remove varicose veins. A consultant vascular surgeon will be able to discuss these with you in detail. They will take in to consideration all your needs and help you choose the most suitable option. Some common options are:

Radiofrequency ablation: A minimally invasive procedure usually carried out under local anaesthetic. A very small tube called a “catheter” is inserted into the vein using ultrasound guidance so that the vein can be closed using heat by an electrical current (radiofrequency ablation) to the vein wall. This causes the vein to shrink and close.

Surgery and Phlebectomy: Usually carried out under general anaesthetic, surgery involves tying off the varicose vein (ligation) to stop blood flow in it and removing it (stripping). Phlebectomy removes the vein via ligation and stripping using a hook through small cuts to the leg.

  • How much does varicose vein treatment cost?

At KIMS Hospital, varicose vein treatment can range from £2,147 to £4,300 depending on the type of treatment and whether it is for one or both legs.

We can offer a guide price before your consultation for various treatments to help you when trying to make your decision. However, once you have had a consultation with a Vascular Surgeon and they have recommended a treatment for you, we will be able to provide a more accurate quote which is based on the usual clinical needs of patients having that procedure.

The price will only change if your pre-admission assessment identifies any additional clinical needs such as; extra nursing care due to pre-existing conditions or special equipment. Following your pre-admission assessment, your final quoted cost is part of our fixed price package that includes the consultant’s fee for performing the procedure, anaesthetic fees, follow-up consultations and all hospital costs including theatre time, nursing care and length of stay.

Once you have made the decision to go ahead with surgery, payment will be taken upfront. Our fixed price guarantee means there are no hidden costs and you can have peace of mind this is taken care of ahead of your surgery so you can concentrate on your treatment and recovery.

Not everyone will have the funds to be able to pay for their surgery upfront. We offer 0% finance options which can help you spread the cost of your surgery over time.

It is important to note that your initial consultation with your surgeon is not included within the package price. Your surgeon will invoice you separately for this.

  • What if treatment isn’t required after a consultation?

If your consultant decides treatment is not suitable for you, you will only need to pay for the consultation fee and any scans or tests you have had up until that point.

  • How long do I need to stay in hospital for?

Almost all patients are able to go home the same day of surgery but your consultant will be able to discuss this with during your consultation.
